The 2022 cold DM that became a $600 million joke
On January 20, 2022, Truell cold-messaged Morning Brew co-founder Alex Lieberman on X: “I’m an MIT student working on cursor.so and looking for some feedback.” His opening question was about tools for writing and the creative process, not code, a sign of how early the team was. Lieberman never replied.

After SpaceX agreed to buy Cursor in June 2026, Lieberman posted a seven-step “how to lose $600 million” joke: had he answered and taken a 1% advisory stake, it would be worth $600 million at the $60 billion price. He closed by congratulating Truell and the team (NewsBytes, Jun 18, 2026).
The math is 1% × $60B. In practice, four funding rounds would have diluted an early 1% stake, so the real figure would likely be lower. The story also shows how Truell started: cold outreach to strangers for feedback, on a domain (cursor.so) the company later replaced with cursor.com.
In his own words
“It’s really easy at an executive level to underestimate just how far away we are from the limit of automating software.”

“It was a bad idea. The founder-market fit was horrible.”
— On the team’s first idea, a 3D design tool, before Cursor (a16z podcast)
“Excited to partner with the SpaceX team to scale up Composer… a meaningful step on our path to build the best place to code with AI.”

How to contact Michael Truell
Michael Truell does not publish a personal email address. Cursor staff mailboxes follow the {first}@anysphere.co pattern, used by about 83% of known addresses (Komo), but an address built from a pattern is a guess, not a confirmed one.

|---|---|
hi@cursor.com | Sales, partnerships, enterprise and privacy requests |
{first}@anysphere.co pattern | Direct outreach to a named employee, after verification |
Outbound to SaaS CEOs and founders at scale |
Before emailing any pattern-based address, run it through a verifier: a bounce hurts deliverability for every later send. All Cursor email patterns and domains are on the Cursor email format page.
