11 Best European Alternatives to AWS (2026)

Amazon Web Services is Amazon's cloud platform, with hundreds of services from virtual servers (EC2) and storage (S3) to databases, analytics and AI. It's also known as Amazon Web Services, Amazon AWS and EC2. The European alternatives that replace it best are OVHcloud (France) for teams moving whole workloads off a hyperscaler, Scaleway (France) for developer teams wanting a hyperscaler-style catalogue in the EU and STACKIT (Germany) for large German companies needing a sovereign hyperscaler-style cloud.

Why look for a European alternative to AWS?

AWS is headquartered in Seattle, United States and owned by Amazon (United States). These are the reasons buyers in Europe most often give for looking elsewhere:

  • AWS is a US company, so US laws such as the CLOUD Act can reach data it holds, including data in its European regions.
  • AWS does keep data in Europe if you pick a European region, and since January 2026 it runs the AWS European Sovereign Cloud: a separate region in Brandenburg, Germany, operated by EU residents through German legal entities.
  • The sovereign region is still owned by Amazon, so buyers who want a European owner, not only European operations, look elsewhere.
  • Outbound data transfer is billed per GB, while several European providers include large traffic allowances, such as Hetzner's 20 TB per server.

How this list was made

A company counts as European if it's headquartered in Europe: the EU, the EEA, Switzerland, the UK, or elsewhere in geographic Europe, never Russia or Belarus. Headquarters means where it's run from, not a registered office. Companies founded in Europe but headquartered elsewhere today are listed separately, and a non-European owner is always named.

Each company was checked against its own legal notice, pricing page and data-processing terms, and its G2 page. Headcount, funding and founding year come from LeadWave's database of SaaS companies. No company paid to be listed or ranked.
