Personal and family cloud storage with lifetime plans
Cloud storage for individuals, families and small teams, with sync, sharing and media playback. Users pick an EU (Luxembourg) or US data region at sign-up. End-to-end encryption is a paid add-on.
Compared with Dropbox: Personal and family storage like Dropbox Plus, with an EU region chosen at sign-up and lifetime plans. Mostly aimed at individuals; Dropbox has more business features.
End-to-end encrypted cloud storage and file exchange for companies, with admin controls and per-user data residency. Files sit in Microsoft Azure data centres, in Ireland unless a business picks another region.
Compared with Dropbox: End-to-end encrypted, so the provider cannot read files. Built for business teams, priced higher per user, and runs on Microsoft Azure data centres.
End-to-end encrypted file storage with sharing, photo backup and document editing, part of the Proton suite with Mail, Pass and VPN. Data sits on Proton servers in Switzerland, Germany and Norway.
Compared with Dropbox: End-to-end encrypted storage on Proton's own servers in Switzerland, Germany and Norway. Fewer third-party integrations than Dropbox; fits best alongside Proton Mail.

Paid plans connect a Dropbox account to copy files across.

Why look for a European alternative to Dropbox?
Dropbox is headquartered in San Francisco, United States. These are the reasons buyers in Europe most often give for looking elsewhere:
Dropbox is a US company, so US laws such as the CLOUD Act apply to it.
Files are stored in US data centres by default. Storage in the EU or UK is offered only to eligible users.
Some buyers want the company itself, not only the data centre, to be in Europe.
How this list was made
A company counts as European if it's headquartered in Europe: the EU, the EEA, Switzerland, the UK, or elsewhere in geographic Europe, never Russia or Belarus. Headquarters means where it's run from, not a registered office. Companies founded in Europe but headquartered elsewhere today are listed separately, and a non-European owner is always named.
Each company was checked against its own legal notice, pricing page and data-processing terms, and its G2 page. Headcount, funding and founding year come from LeadWave's database of SaaS companies. No company paid to be listed or ranked.
It depends on what you use Dropbox for. PCloud (Switzerland) for individuals who want to pay once for storage, Tresorit (Switzerland) for companies handling confidential client files and Proton Drive (Switzerland) for privacy-minded users already on Proton Mail. All 12 on this page are headquartered in Europe; the table compares their hosting, prices and G2 ratings.
pCloud, Proton Drive, Infomaniak kDrive, Nextcloud, Koofr, Filen, Jottacloud, Internxt, Icedrive and Smash have a free plan with no time limit.
Tresorit, Proton Drive, Infomaniak kDrive, Koofr, Filen, Jottacloud and TeamDrive store customer data in Europe by default. pCloud and Smash let you choose a European data region.
Yes: Nextcloud and Internxt. Open-source tools can also be self-hosted on your own servers in Europe.
Koofr documents an import from Dropbox; the details are under each one below.
No. Dropbox, Inc. was founded in 2007 and gives San Francisco as its business address in US filings.
By default Dropbox stores files in the United States. Storage servers in the EU, the UK, Australia and Japan are available to eligible users, mainly business teams billed in those regions.
WeTransfer is European: its terms give an Amsterdam address, and Italy's Bending Spoons has owned it since July 2024. It sends files rather than syncing and storing them, so it replaces Dropbox Transfer, not Dropbox itself.
