From a DJ to a $4 billion valuation
Evans started a mobile DJ company in high school and went to Virginia Tech in 2008 to study music production and artist management. After a near-death experience in 2011, when a gun was pointed at his head, he dropped out to focus on his business and went on to found Fast Followerz, which sold social media automation tools to artists and influencers (Contrary Research). His X handle, @DJ_CURFEW, dates from those years.
ClickUp grew out of frustration with the tools his team used: “I could not help but think: these things are not making us more productive - they’re actually wasting time. And that’s where the idea for ClickUp was born.” (Diginomica) It was bootstrapped until 2020 and reached close to $10 million in annual recurring revenue without spending much on marketing (The Split).
Then the money came fast: $35 million in June 2020 (TechCrunch), $100 million at $1 billion that December (TechCrunch) and $400 million at $4 billion in October 2021 (ClickUp). ClickUp cut 10% of staff in 2023 (TechCrunch), passed $300 million in annual recurring revenue in 2025 (ClickUp), and in May 2026 Evans cut 22% more to rebuild the company around AI agents (X).
In his own words
“We were bootstrapped until 2020.”
— The Split, September 19, 2024 (The Split)
“Today we reduced headcount by 22%. The business is the strongest it’s ever been.”
“The common narrative is that AI makes everyone more productive. It doesn’t.”
— Same post, explaining the “100x org” (X)
“We made the difficult decision to reduce the size of our workforce, primarily to move a portion of our support roles to lower-cost regions.”
— On the 2023 layoffs, July 4, 2023 (TechCrunch)
