From a Brown CS lab to a $68 billion debut

Field grew up in Penngrove, in Sonoma County; his mother was an elementary school teacher and his father a respiratory therapist (Stratechery). He studied at Brown, where in April 2011 his classmate Evan Wallace showed him what WebGL could do in a browser (Figma). In 2012, at 20, he accepted $100,000 from Peter Thiel to leave college (Press Democrat), and the two started Figma.

In 2013 the plan was “an in-browser photo editor” (TechCrunch). Figma was announced only in December 2015, “after three years of silence and hard work” (Figma), as a collaborative interface design tool.

In September 2022 he agreed to sell Figma to Adobe for $20 billion (CNBC); 15 months later the deal was abandoned for lack of a path to regulatory approval (Figma). “Those 16 months felt like an eternity,” he told Stratechery (Stratechery). Figma went public instead, and on July 31, 2025 closed its first day worth almost $68 billion (CNBC).

In his own words

“Design is how you win or lose. Design is bigger than design — and the world needs more designers in charge.”

“Right now we’re in the MS-DOS era for AI, where the prompt is the interface.”

— Founder letter in Figma’s IPO filing, 2025 (SEC)

“It’s not the outcome we had hoped for, but despite thousands of hours spent with regulators around the world detailing differences between our businesses, our products, and the markets we serve, we no longer see a path toward regulatory approval of the deal.”

— On ending the Adobe deal, December 18, 2023 (Figma)

“In a world where code is becoming commoditized, design is increasingly the differentiator.”

— Config India, October 15, 2026 (Figma)
