From Lebanon to a $40 billion exchange
On October 30, 2026, the day after Kalshi’s $40 billion round and the eve of its eighth anniversary in Y Combinator, Mansour told his story in a long post on X (X). He grew up in Lebanon: “We went through war. We had bombs explode in front of my house. I watched brilliant people’s lives destroyed for reasons beyond their control.” His mother, he wrote, “sacrificed everything” to give him and his brother the chance to go back to the US.
He found refuge “in two things: anime and math. Especially math”, because math was “the opposite of unpredictable: clear, deterministic, orderly, and consistent.” At MIT that became a love of statistics, probability and markets, and he read Hayek, Surowiecki, Hanson and Tetlock, whom he calls the founding fathers of prediction markets (X). He met Luana Lopes Lara in class there (Forbes).
They had little money when they started. “Luana’s sister bought the Kalshi domain name for us (for ~$1.7k). We moved to SF to get started.” The first principle they set was “regulatory-first”: Kalshi worked with regulators for years before it listed a single market, even while competitors overtook it (X). The CFTC approved its exchange in November 2020 (CFTC).
In the same post he thanked the early team, naming Lior, Brandon, Rainer, Luis, Xavier and Josef, who “stuck with us for years”, and acknowledged that markets “can present harms (manipulation, insiders, and addictive behaviors)”, especially in sports and short-term options, which is why “guardrails need to exist” (X).
In his own words
“The first principle we defined at the company: regulatory-first. We worked with regulators for years before we listed a single market.”
“Election markets are here to stay. Prediction markets have been banned, censored, limited, and pushed out for decades.”
— After the CFTC dropped its appeal, May 5, 2025 (X)
“A sportsbook sets the odds and takes the other side of your bet. Prediction markets are markets, where buyers and sellers compete to discover and produce efficient prices.”
“To our tens of millions of users: you have made Kalshi bigger than anything Luana and I could have possibly imagined.”
