Poolside in 2026: a lost cluster and the Nvidia deal

In late 2025 Poolside tried to raise $2 billion to pay for a cluster of 40,000 Nvidia GB300 chips from CoreWeave. In the founders’ words to investors: “We had a 6 week window in which to raise $2 billion dollars to pay for a 40,000 GB300 cluster coming online in January. We didn’t close it in time, and we lost the cluster” (TNW). The CoreWeave deal for its Texas data center fell apart too (DCD).

In August 2026 Nvidia agreed to pay $6 billion for a non-exclusive license to Poolside’s “Model Factory”, the system it uses to build models, and to invest $1 billion at a $12 billion valuation, according to a letter to investors; 109 Poolside employees were offered jobs at Nvidia (Newcomer). “This is not an acquisition and it is not an acquihire,” the founders wrote. Neither company has confirmed the deal publicly (TNW).

Poolside shut down its hosted model service on October 31, 2026; its models remain free to download (Poolside) (Hugging Face). One investor, StepStone, valued its Poolside shares at about 2.5 times their 2024 cost at the end of 2025 and back at cost by June 2026 (SEC).

What does Poolside make? Products

Poolside builds AI models for writing software, betting on reinforcement learning on coding tasks (Air Street Press). Its first models, Malibu and Point, ran on AWS (Poolside). In April 2026 it released its first open-weight models, the Laguna family, with a preview of pool, a coding agent for the terminal (Poolside).
