How Warner and Kant started Poolside
“The poolside story starts at GitHub, because I met my co founder when I tried to acquire his company to become the AI inside of GitHub,” Warner says. “It didn’t work out from an acquisition perspective, but he and I became great friends” (Penn State). They later co-hosted an engineering-leadership podcast, and founded Poolside in 2023 to go “after narrow AGI through software and code” (Newcomer). The name came by accident: they had planned to call it Snowball, until Amazon’s trademark got in the way, and Warner’s “credit card still says snowball” (Penn State).
Jason Warner
Warner grew up in Connecticut and got into computers through a high-school placement at IBM (Penn State). After Penn State and RPI he worked at the anti-fraud startup 41st Parameter, Canonical and Heroku, then spent four years as GitHub’s CTO, before and after Microsoft bought it, and two years as a venture capitalist at Redpoint (SEC). He lives in Canada.
Eiso Kant
Kant, who is Dutch, started companies young: at 22 he was a final-year student at IE University in Madrid running Tyba, a recruiting startup (IE University). In 2015 he co-founded source{d}, which applied AI to source code, and in 2019 founded Athenian (SEC). He lives in Portugal and also runs Poolside Infrastructure Company, which is building Project Horizon (PIC).

“We didn’t believe you could just fine-tune your way to general intelligence.”
