Three companies before Kore.ai
After BITS Pilani, Koneru worked as a software consultant. In 1993 he co-founded Oxford Systems, a systems integrator, and in 1994 sold it to Intelligroup, an IT consultancy in New Jersey (SEC). Intelligroup was founded in 1987 by Ashok Pandey, not by Koneru, as some bios suggest. Koneru owned 28.1% of it before its 1996 Nasdaq listing, at 26.
He rose to co-CEO in 1999 (SEC), then ran SeraNova, Intelligroup’s internet-services spin-off, which agreed in 2000 to sell itself to Silverline Technologies (SEC). He left Intelligroup’s board in 2002 over “disagreement with the strategic direction of the Company” (SEC).
In Orlando he then founded Kony, a platform for building mobile apps (SEC). He handed its CEO role to Tom Hogan in 2014 (KSL), and Temenos bought Kony in 2019 for $559 million (Willkie).
Building Kore.ai
“I founded Kore.ai in 2014 to create a conversational AI-first platform (well before even the conversational AI term was coined) for enterprises,” Koneru says (Pulse 2.0). Kore first shipped as a messaging app for work with built-in bots; Fortune called it “a new venture from serial entrepreneur Raj Koneru” (Fortune). He has put his own money in since the start, and by 2019 total funding had passed $45 million (MarTech Series). Growth investors followed, Vistara in 2019 (Pulse 2.0) and a Series C in 2021 (Kore.ai), and Kore.ai passed $100 million in ARR by 2024 (TechCrunch).
In his own words
“Building and deploying AI agents is no big deal. The question is, do they meet your goals 3-6-12 months into production.”
— Post on LinkedIn, October 7, 2026 (LinkedIn)
“The answer is architecture. The model owns the conversation. The runtime owns everything that can’t be undone.”
— Post on LinkedIn, October 16, 2026 (LinkedIn)
“Building agents is easy now, so companies end up with sprawl instead of value.”
— APAC News Network, September 25, 2026 (APAC News Network)
“I think people are jumping too fast at execution without putting in thought, into the what, why and how.”
— CX Today, February 10, 2026 (CX Today)
“The humans are always in charge and accountable, and have to be.”
— Times of India, February 22, 2026 (Times of India)
